Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is located in the waters of Lake Huron about 6 miles northeast of Mackinaw City and 3 miles east of St. Ignace between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. Transportation on and around the island is limited to horses, biking, walking, and boating (although there is a small airport as well). Mackinac Island is a popular summer tourist destination featuring historical museums, forts, lodging, kayak tours, horseback and carriage rides, shopping, nightlife, biking and hiking trails, fudge, golf, boat cruises, and more. Ferries such as Star Line and Shepler's transport passengers to and from Mackinac Island from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City on a frequent and regular basis throughout the warmer months of the year.
The Round Island Lighthouse is located off the northwest tip of Round Island, less than a mile south of Mackinac Island. Beyond the Round Island Lighthouse we can also see the Round Island Passage Light and the Mackinac Island State Harbor. This aerial photo was taken on a summer morning from south of the lighthouse.
